Athletic Republic recently hosted a dynamic and insightful webinar, The Realities of NIL, exploring how Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) is reshaping the college athletics landscape.
Led by Russ Thomas and Mark McCain, owners of Athletic Republic Capital Region, the panel included current college athletes and industry experts who offered real-world perspectives and advice.
The conversation centered around three core themes every athlete and family should keep in mind:
1. Play Now
With the transfer portal accelerating player movement, many programs are prioritizing experienced athletes who can contribute immediately.
The panel recommended that high school athletes choose a school where they have a strong chance of getting playing time early in their college careers.
Early on-field experience can boost visibility and open the door to future transfer and NIL opportunities.
2. Character Matters
It’s not just about performance. Athletes who stand out are those who demonstrate strong character both on and off the field.
That includes how they carry themselves in the locker room, on campus, and online.
A well-developed personal brand, thoughtful social media presence, and strong life skills can all play a significant role in recruiting and NIL success.
3. Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing
College athletes juggle more than ever before. Amidst the demands of training, academics, and NIL opportunities, it’s critical to stay grounded.
The athletes who succeed long-term are those who remain focused on excelling in their sport, staying academically strong, and contributing positively to their program and university community.
