It’s one of the toughest positions for any athlete to be in: standing on the sideline, jersey clean, watching the game unfold while your teammates battle it out. You’ve put in the work. You’ve gone to every practice. You’ve run the laps. But when game time rolls around, the coach looks right past you.
The reality of modern sports: whether it’s soccer, basketball, football, or softball: is that "working hard" isn't always enough to earn a starting spot. Coaches aren't just looking for effort; they are looking for impact. And the biggest impact an athlete can make is through speed, agility, and the ability to move faster than the opponent.
At Athletic Republic Knoxville, we’ve seen hundreds of athletes arrive at our 18,000-square-foot facility frustrated by their lack of playing time. They feel "stuck" at a certain speed. They feel a step behind on the field. Our Acceleration program was built specifically to solve that problem.
If you want to stop watching from the bench and start making plays that force the coach to keep you on the field, it’s time to move beyond traditional "gym" workouts and embrace the science of speed.
Why "Running More" Won't Make You Faster
A common mistake parents and athletes make is thinking that more running leads to more speed. If you want to get better at endurance, you run more miles. But speed is a different beast entirely. Speed is about mechanics, power output, and neuromuscular efficiency.
Most athletes have "energy leaks": mechanical flaws in their stride or posture that act like a car's emergency brake being left on while they try to accelerate. You can push the engine as hard as you want, but you’re fighting against your own body.
At Athletic Republic Knoxville, we use science-based protocols to identify these leaks and fix them. Our training isn't about just "getting tired"; it's about teaching your body how to produce more force into the ground with every single step. When you produce more force more efficiently, you get faster. It’s that simple.
The Acceleration Program: The Science of the Starting Spot
The Acceleration program is our flagship training protocol for a reason. It is designed to take athletes through a systematic progression that builds the physical tools coaches crave: explosive first steps, the ability to change direction without losing speed, and the durability to stay fast for all four quarters.
Here is how we do it inside our Knoxville facility:
1. The Super Running Treadmill
Standard gym treadmills are for cardio. Our Super Running Treadmills are for performance. They can reach speeds of up to 28 mph and inclines of up to 40%. More importantly, they allow our certified trainers to stand right next to the athlete and correct their form in real-time.
With video feedback (like you see in the images above), athletes can actually see what they are doing wrong. Are your hips dropping? Is your arm swing crossing your midline? When an athlete sees their mechanics on a screen and then feels the correction on the treadmill, the improvement happens at lightning speed.
2. Multi-Directional Agility
Being fast in a straight line is great, but most sports are played in a series of cuts, pivots, and lateral movements. Our soccer training and softball training protocols place a heavy emphasis on "game speed."
We teach athletes how to decelerate (stop) safely and then re-accelerate in a new direction. This "eccentric strength" is what prevents ACL injuries and allows an athlete to "shake" a defender or close a gap on an attacker.
3. Explosive Power and Plyometrics
Speed is essentially "strength expressed quickly." To earn a starting spot, you need to be the person who wins the jump ball or beats everyone to the loose ball. We use specialized equipment like the Plyo Press and our 18,000 square feet of turf and wood-floor agility zones to build explosive power.
More Than a Gym: An 18,000 Sq Ft Advantage
When you walk into Athletic Republic Knoxville, you realize immediately that this isn't your local neighborhood gym. We don't have rows of elliptical machines and people scrolling on their phones.
Our facility is a high-performance lab. We have dedicated zones for:
- High-Speed Treadmill Training: Where the raw speed is built.
- Turf and Plyometric Areas: Where we translate that speed into agility and sport-specific movement.
- Strength and Conditioning: Where we build the "armor" to protect athletes from injury.
- Technology-Driven Analysis: Where data, not guesswork, drives every workout.
For an athlete currently sitting on the bench, this environment is a game-changer. It’s hard to stay a "bench-sitter" when you are training in the same environment and with the same protocols used by professional and collegiate athletes. The psychological shift that happens when an athlete realizes they are becoming faster than their competition is often just as important as the physical shift.
Turning the "Bench" Mentality into a "Starter" Reality
The difference between a starter and a bench-sitter is often just a fraction of a second.
- It’s the fraction of a second it takes to beat a defender to the corner.
- It’s the fraction of a second you gain by reacting to a play faster because your body is conditioned to move without thinking.
- It’s the extra energy you have in the final five minutes of the game because your "stamina" is built on efficient movement rather than just grit.
Coaches start the players they trust. And coaches trust players who are reliable, fast, and physically dominant. When you show up to practice after a season at Athletic Republic Knoxville, you aren't the same athlete who left. You move differently. You look more confident. You are, quite literally, faster.
How to Get Started at Athletic Republic Knoxville
We know that every athlete is at a different point in their journey. Some are just starting out and need to build a foundation of movement (what we call our Ignition program). Others are seasoned high school competitors looking to sharpen their edge for college scouts.
That’s why we always start with a conversation and an assessment. We want to know your goals. Is it a starting spot on the varsity team? Is it a college scholarship? Is it just the confidence to keep up with the kids at school?
Whatever the goal, the path starts with a plan.
Our 18,000-square-foot facility is designed to help you reach those goals in a supportive, high-energy environment. We aren't here to scream at you; we are here to coach you. We provide the science, the technology, and the expertise. You provide the effort.
